Taxonomy: f. Plasmodidae
Animal: Plasmodium vivax 1 16.jpg
Sites: Blood
Comment:
Plasmodium vivax - thin film with schizont which have 14 - 24 merozoites almost filling the enlarged pale, red cell. Yellow brown pigment is present as are Schuffner's dots. The incubation period is 10-17 days and the paroxysm period is 44-48 hours, somewhat irregular at first but becoming more so as the broods of parasites synchronise their cycles (this does not occur as much with P.falciparum infections) . Different strains have different incubation times and relapse intervals as well as different morphological features eg. the Malaysian strains have more multiple infections and smaller schizonts with fewer merozoites , some PNG strains have P.ovale type features.
